LEARN ABOUT THE CANDIDATES:

Richard Hetherington
Picture
Rick Hetherington graduated Swartz Creek High School, and then from the University of Michigan-Flint with a degree in Criminal Justice. After graduation, Rick chose to pursue a career in law enforcement, right here in Flint. After serving as an officer for 23 years, approximately 15 of which were in an investigative capacity, Rick retired as a sergeant in 2011, and continued his pursuit of justice by becoming an attorney. After graduating from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Rick was immediately hired by the law firm of CFlegal, PC., where he is now a partner.

Rick has a strong affinity for all things Flint and Genesee County and takes an active role in protecting and defending it, working vigorously to dispel misinformation and educate people about the positive factors about our community.

He is a past master of Genesee Lodge #174, Free and Accepted Masons, a member and temple attorney for Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple. He is also part of the Flint Rotary Club and the Centennial Inns of Court.

Rick has served as Vice President of the GCHS for the last three years, having previously been on the GCHS Advisory Board.  He is also the chairman of the Arches Committee.

He lives with his wife, Kim, in Grand Blanc. They have six children and six grandchildren.
Susan Ledbetter
Picture
A small business owner, Susan has been a licensed child care provider through the State of Michigan for 25 years. She has also worked with many non-profits as an event planner, organizing functions ranging anywhere from 10 to 1,500 attendees. Some of her clients include the Davison Community Schools, Vardar Soccer Club, MESA Soccer Club (board member), AYSO Soccer Davison (board member), and St. John Catholic Church in Davison where she has coordinated large-scale events hosting Bishop Earl Boyea.

Susan has served on the GCHS Board since 2022.  All of our extremely successful events over the last three years have been planned and organized by Susan in her role as Event Coordinator, working on the Program Committee.

Susan was born and raised in Flint, graduated from Flint Hamady High School, and currently resides in Davison with her husband, Will.  They have two daughters, both married, who have blessed them with four grandchildren. She is most happy spending time with her family and friends, at the lake, gardening, dancing, decorating, shopping, volunteering, and attending church.
MacKenzie French
Picture
Mackenzie French was born and raised in Durand, Michigan, where her love for history first took root through the city’s rich railroad legacy. That early fascination with preserving and recording the past has grown into a deep commitment to honoring the stories that shape communities—especially those in Genesee County.

She attended Durand Area Schools but spent much of her early years visiting Flint schools with her father, an elementary teacher. A decade ago, she made Flint her home. Today, Mackenzie manages at Churchill’s in downtown Flint, where her passion for the service industry fuels her drive to connect with people, listen to their stories, and be a part of the city’s living history.

An avid traveler, Mackenzie is always the one stopping to read every historical marker on vacation, driven by the belief that every place, whether it be across the country or in her own backyard, has a story worth uncovering. In her free time, she enjoys gardening and hosting events that bring people together—creating spaces where history, community, and connection naturally flourish.

Mackenzie believes that Genesee County holds a rich, complex story—one of resilience, innovation, culture, and community—that is deeply deserving of preservation. As a new board member of the Genesee County Historical Society, she will be honored to help safeguard that story and ensure it is remembered, celebrated, and shared for generations to come.
