The culture of Flint and Genesee County has long been defined by several things: automobiles, athletes, a blue collar work ethic, and a certain kind of food and service culture, known as the 'coney island'. 'Coney Island' identified both the kind of restaurants that operated and the signature food they served. A delicious bit of history, they have inspired music, books, art, and even poetry...and many a late night excursion for the 'two up with everything.'
Our program included a walk through the history of the coney culture led by GCHS President (and devoted Coney Culture fanatic) Gary Fisher. We were entertained by the famous Flint musical minstrel, Dan Hall, who serenaded us with his noble tune..."The Angelo's Song." Throughout the event, Jan Worth Nelson recited poetry selections of Karen Paul Holmes, the daughter of Angelo's original founder. Connor Coyne, read some of his moving prose about late nights at his favorite coney island, bringing many an eye to tear...
And of course, the star of the show: 'two up' piled high with Flint style coney sauce, a bag of chips, and drink to every guest in the room! |
